How can I be more eco-friendly working from home?
Remote work is here to stay.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic, many of us found ourselves obliged to stay home without realizing this would bring to the light the start of a self-aware and eco-friendly work space.
Our quality of life increased working from home, introducing the opportunity to save time, money and enjoy at-home comfort. Also, it showed better results based on business experiences and decisions.
Not only did remote working give us the chance to create new habits, and even though we might not be able to physically observe its importance, our environment definitely does.
The decrease in traffic by vehicle and by foot, changes in consumption, carbon footprint, and air pollution (Greenpeace) are some of the highlighted benefits from this massive world event.
Tips to improve sustainability at home:
Adapt and save up: resources such as water and energy are limited and oftentimes we take irresponsible and irrational use of them.
When figuring out your workspace at home, we suggest inclining yourself to a place where you can receive natural sunlight. Not only will it help to lower the power bill, but you will also be taking care of the environment.
Another conscious habit you can easily develop at home is to turn off electrical equipment once you are done working with them. Remember they keep consuming energy even when these equipment are not being used
Recycle adequately: giving proper use to things after we are done using them is fundamental to have sustainable habits.
Did you know that only 10% of our discarded objects are effectively recycled? This is due to us not paying enough attention towards dividing our waste, which is why it is important that we apply all three waste bins and follow their specific purpose: the green bin used for organic waste, the black bin for miscellaneous waste, and the white bin for recyclable waste.
Consumption awareness: responsible and rational consumption is a small step towards true change.
When conversing about consumption, what comes to mind is a selection of products. In this case, we are focusing on the aspect of consumption through screens.
A wonderful way to care for our environment while surfing the web is to use the ECOSIA web browser. Not only does it have a neutral carbon print, but since the year 2020 their footprint turned negative because it produces double the amount of renewable energy needed for it to function. They also plant trees as you use their services.
Another easy way to help maintain our environment while we work is to delete unnecessary mail. The accumulation of mail generates approximately 23,475 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) every year.
Finally, small changes DO make a difference.
